Føroya Fornminnissavn Historical Museum of the Faroe Islands www.natmus.fo
Føroya Fornminnissavn is the national museum of the Faroe Islands. It was founded in 1952, four years after the islands obtained home rule under the state of Denmark.
As a national museum Føroya Fornminnissavn covers all aspects and periods of Faroese history. The closeness of the Atlantic Ocean in the daily lives of the islanders is reflected in the collections. The exhibitions cover among other things artefacts related to pre-industrial fishery and boatbuilding as well as the maritime history in modern industrial times.
The museum has a large collection of boats of the traditional Faroese type. This type of boats has been used for transportation and fishery in the islands since late middle Ages. The skills behind building them are clearly related to the boatbuilding skills of the Vikings.
In addition to the exhibitions Føroya Fornminnissavn offers its visitors and users access to a large archive of old photographs.
