Stavanger Maritime Museum specialises in the maritime history of south-western Norway. The collections include artefacts, archives, paintings, photographs and other documents from the region's shipping, shipbuilding and coastal culture. In the restored merchant's property in Stavanger harbour, the exhibitions present the region's maritime history from c.1800. They include the district's shipbuilding and maritime trades, the herring trade in the 19th century, the development of the merchant fleet and Stavanger's harbour. There is a sail loft, shipping office, general store and merchant's apartments. The Museum operates two sailing vessels: the sloop "Anna af Sand" built 1848 and the Colin Archer yacht "Wyvern" built 1897. The Museum is responsible for the protection of historic monuments and sites in the sea and freshwater areas of Rogaland. The Museum has established an extensive international network in the North Sea and the Baltic.
