HULL MARITIME MUSEUM
The Maritime Museum was founded in 1912 and moved to its present site in the city centre in 1975 housed in the former offices of the Hull Dock Co. built in 1871. The collections illustrate the city's maritime history from the 18th. century to the present.
There is a comprehensive collection of artefacts, logs and journals relating to the Arctic whaling trade and the largest display of scrimshaw (the folk art of the whaler) on this side of the Atlantic.
A gallery is devoted to fishing in the North Sea and deep water trawling,1840--2000 and the story is told of HULL's merchant trade, and the development of the major steamship companies-notably the Wilson Line.
An outstanding series of marine paintings, mostly by local artists, covers all aspects of shipping from the 18th century to 20th centuries. |
