The Maritime Museum of Gothenburg, founded in 1913, shows 400 years of Swedish shipping history. The exhibition at the second floor starts with the Swedish colonial ambitions in Africa and North America (New Sweden) and a 24-pounder cannon from the Danish ship “Great Sophie”, which sank outside Gothenburg in 1645.

The exhibitions showing the East-India trade contains shards of china from the East-Indiaman “Götheborg II”, and the 19th century is
represented by shipbuilding, the life on board and souvenirs from exotic places. The struggle
between sail and steam, the great ocean-liners,
20th century cargo-shipping and modern freight
then follows.

The third floor shows fishing history as well as modern fishing industry, shipbuilding at the
shipyards of Gothenburg and the development of Gothenburg’s harbour. There is also a playing
room for children at the third floor.

The popular Aquarium shows many species
of animals from Scandinavian waters.
