Located in the heart of the historic port, the
Musée portuaire welcomes the public in the
friendly atmosphere of an old tobacco warehouse.

The museum’s collections illustrate the history
of the port of Dunkirk and its spectacular development, from a small fishing village at
the start of the second millenium to the vast industrial and commercial port that is spread
over 17 km of shore. Old pictures, photographs
and extracts of letters evoke the men and
women whoses lives were intimately linked
with the port : Icelandic fishermen, dockers,
long-haul sailors, etc. The displaying of the
activities and trades of today allows the public
to understand the present role of the port, an essential link in the chain of world transport
and a place for trade and perpetual movement.

The museum’s collection also includes several old ships which witness the activity of a port.
Some of them can be visited, for instance the three-master Duchesse Anne (1901), the light-ship Sandettie (1948) or the barge Guilde (1929) and its exhibition “Going with the current ”.

Opening hours :
Every day, except Tuesdays, from 10.00 to 12.45 and 13.30 to 18.00. In July and August, from 10.00 to 18.00, 7 days a week.
Annual closing days : 1 January, the Monday
before Shrove Tuesday, 1 May and 25 December.
