The Scheepvaartmuseum (Maritime Museum) is great fun for both young and old visitors. The museum accommodates one of the largest and finest maritime collections in the world, including paintings by Mesdag and Savery, globes and the famous maps drawn by Blaeu. Moored at the jetty is a beautiful replica of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) ship ‘Amsterdam’. In a recent renovation campaign this eye catcher’s authentic interior has been restored with a cabin, a bread, gunpowder and cheese storeroom. You can also see sailors’ bunks. This winter the Scheeepvaartmuseum is organising three exhibitions that will show unusual parts of its collection. Kunst op het water (Art on the water) will present some of the finest ship decorations. Klein beginnen (Starting on a small scale) will focus on models of ships, while the third exhibition will present a survey of the atmospheric photos Annemie Wolff took of Amsterdam’s harbour in the 1950s.
